Should You Splurge for Dinesen Flooring or Go With Dinesen Flooring Alternatives?

May 24, 2013Filed under: Classic Style

Ever wanted something beautiful for the home but just couldn’t budget its price tag? Unless you are seriously wealthy, of course, you have. That’s usually the case with Dinesen flooring, a Danish family-run business, beloved by architects and interior designers for their outstanding quality and appearance. Dinesen flooring is beautiful but all that gorgeousness comes at a price. Considering that you need to apply flooring on a large scale (unlike say an expensive wallpaper where you can do a feature wall), the costs can really add up.  Some people who love the look choose to go with Dinesen flooring alternatives.

What’s So Great About Dinesen Flooring?

I love Dinesen floors – simple, elegant and wide planked.  They are so long and wide that you can lay them without any ugly joints or edges ruining the clean lines of the wood floor. They create a feeling of space and light even despite the qualities of the room itself – something that Scandinavian design does well!
Dinesen  flooring is considered among the world’s best wood flooring.  If you want to check out the real thing, you can see Dinesen floors installed at The Saatchi Gallery.  Thousands of people walk across the floor of the Saatchi Gallery which goes to show Dinesen flooring can stand up to your family’s hard wear!

Dinesen have been in the business for 100+ years. Dinesen flooring is made from wood cut from sustainable processing of French and German forests. They choose trees that are 80 to 200 years old and hence the width allows for wide planking. The floors are treated with lye and soap to get that Scandinavian pale look.

Dinesen flooring cost depends on the width and the length (and the type of wood of course). They start at the lowest width of 125mm at around £80 sq. meter to the widest at 500 mm at around £380/sq. meter.
Let’s go with the assumption you want the wide plank Dinesen is known for so say about £300/sq. meter. For an average family home of 1500 square feet (140 square meters) the actual Dinesen flooring cost alone would be £42,000! And, that’s the Dinesen flooring price before fitting costs!

My husband though nearly fell of his chair when I told him the price.  Sort of like my ideal refrigerator (the Sub-Zero), it wasn’t happening.
He wasn’t convinced by these swoon worthy images of Dinesen floors.

Dinesen Flooring Alternatives

When I first saw interior designer Paula Gowar’s former home, I thought she had splurged on Dinesen floors. Her budget, however, simply didn’t allow for a Dinesen floor. But check out how good her floors look!

When that ugly word “budget” rears its head, I think you simply have to be creative to achieve a close approximation if you can’t have the real thing.  Obviously you will only be achieving the Dinesen floors look and not the quality.
What you really need to get right to approximate the look of Dinesen floors is i) the aged pale look and ii) really wide planks. Another nice to have feature for Dinesen wood alternatives is bevelled edges so that there is a bit of a gap between the planks.
The modern farmhouse look works well with Dinesen flooring too as shown in the Dinesen Country Home

Here’s one way of getting the Dinesen wood floors look for less:

The Solid Wood Flooring Company have a recommendation for a look similar to Dinesen flooring.  They do 340mm wide oak planks which can be finished with Blanchon wood ageing agent and hard wax oil.  If you ask nicely, you can even get a sample done to your specifications to see if you like it before you buy.  Now, that’s service!

So, what do you think?  Would you splurge on Dinesen wood floors or opt for a Dinesen flooring alternative?
